Learn to communicate God’s Word to oral-preference cultures
Monday 5 - Friday 9 November, 2018
Redcliffe College, Gloucester, UK
Sponsor: Redcliffe College, Wycliffe Bible Translators, SIL

The art of storytelling has far from died out, and the need for good biblical storytellers is as strong as ever in a world of oral cultures, postliterate societies and oral-preference learners.

If you are interested in story crafting, or are serving or planning to serve with a culture who either have no Scriptures, or prefer audio and visual ways of learning, then the Chronological Bible Storying course will give you the tools you need to be effective.

This course will equip you to help others engage with Scripture in a deep, relational way as you deliver the biblical narrative through the art of storytelling.

This unique course features no texts, no handouts, and no written aids. The intense 5-day course is entirely oral and participatory, and it is essential that you are able to attend each day.

Chronological Bible Storying will help you to:

  • help others learn and internalise the story
  • lead a discussion about the spiritual application of the story
  • begin storycrafting with a Bibleless language group, or people who have access to Scriptures but need help engaging with them

The dates for this course are 5-9 November 2018 (with an
optional pre-course social time together on the evening of 4
November). The tuition fees are £250 per student.

For more details on the course and booking information see Redcliffe's website.

Redcliffe’s Bible Storying course is delivered by the Centre for Linguistics, Translation and Literacy, a partnership with Wycliffe Bible Translators and SIL International.  [more...]

A week of learning, creating, and discovery
Dallas, USA and Ware, Herts., UK
Sponsor: International Council of Ethnodoxologists, SIL, PBT, GIAL and allnations

Arts for a Better Future (ABF) is a one-week workshop that trains participants to spark local, Scripture-infused creativity that moves communities toward the kingdom of God.

The training content follows the 7-step process contained in Creating Local Arts Together: A Manual to Help Communities Reach Their Kingdom Goals (2013, William Carey Library). Participants join in a condensed application of this flexible model to an existing cultural context. They then develop plans to implement principles for encouraging Scripture engagement through the arts to a community in which they work.

ABF focuses on discovering all artistic forms of communication in a community, and then helping local Christians communicate Scripture in these forms by a process of critical contextualization. The workshop is drenched in warm, artistic personal interaction with other people and God. A wide range of people interested in increasing the penetration of Scripture into a group have benefited from ABF: missionaries with artistic gifts, cross-cultural ministry strategic planners, pastors, worship leaders, people interested in developing multicultural worship, artists of all kinds, and others.

Sponsored by the International Council of Ethnodoxologists, SIL International, Pioneer Bible Translators, and the World Arts program at the Graduate Institute of Applied Linguistics (and All Nations Christian College for the UK event).

Upcoming ABF workshops:

See the ABF website for details of future workshops.

Strategy and Methods, Multi-Cultural Teamwork
Online course
Sponsor: Graduate Institute of Applied Linguistics (GIAL)

The Graduate Institute of Applied Linguistics (GIAL) is offering three online courses that are particularly useful to Scripture Engagement workers.

  • Scripture Engagement Strategy and Methods will enable you to analyze a situation anywhere in the world and see what methods are more and less useful for that place. It uses the “Eight Conditions” model but goes well beyond what is in the article.
  •
  • Current Issues in Scripture Engagement - What are the major issues influencing Scripture engagement below the surface? This course encourages the student to analyze motivations and causal elements that underlie many of the Scripture engagement choices people make. Using a partially student-designed approach, course participants select specific Scripture engagement issues and skills they are interested in exploring more comprehensively. Emerging topics related to Scripture engagement are debated and students propose original contributions to the field of Scripture engagement. Students also develop skills in consulting and workshop design.

  • Multi-Cultural Teamwork will enable you to work closely together with people from other countries for prolonged periods.

These are 3-credit graduate level courses, but open to upper level undergraduates. To learn more, including the new easy way to apply online, go to http://www.gial.edu/academics/online-courses/  [more...]
