Redcliffe College, Gloucester, UK

The MA in Contemporary Missiology with Redcliffe College is designed to give a firm understanding of mission approaches and issues.

All students take two compulsory modules which:

  • explore approaches to the concept of missio Dei (God’s mission in the world) and holistic mission, and give a thorough orientation on skills for postgraduate missiological research and study.
  • focus on a number of crucial issues that demand attention as we participate in God’s mission in the contemporary world.

In addition, it is possible to take the Scripture Engagement stream which includes the following two modules:

Scripture Engagement: Approaches and Issues
The Bible is sometimes described as a ‘tool’ of mission. This module will enable you to explore and evaluate a number of approaches for and issues in Scripture Engagement in different cultural contexts, both in the 'West' and in the majority world.

Scripture Engagement: Professional Project
The module will provide you with the opportunity to undertake an approved project of independent study relating to a specific area of Scripture Engagement professional practice.  [more...]

This intensive Bible Storying Course will give participants the skills to help people engage with God’s Word through the retelling of Biblical Stories. The method has been used with people who prefer audio or visual ways of learning as well as in cultures where the Bible is not available in printed form.

The course will help participants to:

  • Tell a story to a small group, help others to learn the story, and lead a discussion about the spiritual application of the story
  • Understand the worldviews of the group, which stories are most appropriate to the group and and how to adapt your story to a given worldview
  • Begin story crafting with a Bibleless language group, or people already with Scriptures but who need help in engaging with them to understand the Bible’s whole story. They could be somewhere remote or even in your own town in the UK or Europe!

For more details on the course and booking information see Redcliffe's website.

The course is taught in partnership with Wycliffe Bible Translators and SIL, as part of Redcliffe’s Centre for Linguistics, Translation and Literacy.  [more...]

Strategy and Methods, Multi-Cultural Teamwork
Online course
Sponsor: Graduate Institute of Applied Linguistics (GIAL)

The Graduate Institute of Applied Linguistics (GIAL) is offering three online courses that are particularly useful to Scripture Engagement workers.

  • Scripture Engagement Strategy and Methods will enable you to analyze a situation anywhere in the world and see what methods are more and less useful for that place. It uses the “Eight Conditions” model but goes well beyond what is in the article.
  •
  • Current Issues in Scripture Engagement - What are the major issues influencing Scripture engagement below the surface? This course encourages the student to analyze motivations and causal elements that underlie many of the Scripture engagement choices people make. Using a partially student-designed approach, course participants select specific Scripture engagement issues and skills they are interested in exploring more comprehensively. Emerging topics related to Scripture engagement are debated and students propose original contributions to the field of Scripture engagement. Students also develop skills in consulting and workshop design.

  • Multi-Cultural Teamwork will enable you to work closely together with people from other countries for prolonged periods.

These are 3-credit graduate level courses, but open to upper level undergraduates. To learn more, including the new easy way to apply online, go to http://www.gial.edu/academics/online-courses/  [more...]
